This study investigates the Japanese occupation of Camalig, Albay from 1941 to 1945, focusing on its military objectives, socio-economic and political consequences, and the surviving historical traces that inform local memory. The findings indicate that the occupation formed part of Japan’s broader Pacific War strategy, exploiting Camalig’s geography and resources with minimal resistance following the unopposed landing in Legazpi. Key sites such as rice fields, Quituinan Hill, and Hoyop-hoyopan Cave were repurposed for military operations, leaving physical, economic, and personal legacies preserved in community narratives.
The occupation disrupted Camalig’s social structures, economic activities, and political administration. Families were displaced to the mountains, public gatherings were suppressed, and local governance was replaced by appointed officials under military authority. Agriculture and trade declined due to the destruction of farms, food shortages, and forced labor. Despite these conditions, residents sustained cultural practices in concealed locations, notably Hoyop-hoyopan Cave, which now contribute to the town’s cultural identity and heritage tourism.
Tangible remnants, including caves, tunnels, and historic residences such as Moyo’s House and Navera’s House, serve as evidence of wartime experience. The study concludes that these sites embody both the hardships and resilience of Camaligueños. It recommends integrating these locations into the Araling Panlipunan and History curriculum, developing contextualized instructional materials, and fostering collaboration among local government, educators, historians, and community members to strengthen heritage preservation, intergenerational learning, and sustainable cultural tourism.
