Degenerative aortic valve with severe stenosis: A case report

This is a case report representing a 69-year-old female who was diagnosed with degenerative aortic valve with severe stenosis which is a disease characterized by narrowing of the aortic valve and restriction of blood flow from the left ventricle of the heart into the aorta. Periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis have an association with infected heart tissue (Endocarditis) whereby the inflammation causes narrowing of arteries and aggravate aortic valve stenosis. Periodontal diseases also cause poor glycaemic control due to insulin resistance caused by gram negative oral microbes which gain entry into blood stream when periodontal breakdown occurs. Maintenance of good oral health is important for prevention of heart conditions and ensuring glycaemic control is not affected.
